Some Random Stories

Ube royale Ice cream
One weekend after we went home from the grocery, I told my husband how I salivated over an ube ice cream at the dairy section.

Why didn’t you buy it? He asked.
I answered with a frown, It was $ 8.99.
He immediately went back  to the the grocery and bought the ice cream for me. I thought that was sweet of him, but it was kind of  a splurge. But then, the first spoonful of that ice cream that went to my mouth made me so thankful that he did that.

The water fountain in Portage Place Mall, Downtown Winnipeg
On the same weekend, my family, composed of myself, my husband and our little daughter went downtown to hang around and see what was up. It is amazing how old, ordinary things like looking at this water fountain in Portage place mall becomes a new exciting activity now that we have a little girl who claps and yells in delight every time the water rises up. I used to sit by myself in the benches around this fountain a few years back. You  probably even saw me. I am that woman caressing pages of a book, listening to 80’s music on the iPod and clutching a big purse. I have always seen this fountain but this particular day with my daughter, watching it was a completely different experience. It was probably the first time that I saw how beautiful it was.
Longanisa Pasta ( Cured sausage Pasta)

I cooked this pasta a few months ago.
If you  are wondering why it is not on the blog, well, because I am not sure what I put in it and how much. It is one of my experimental dishes where I randomly throw in the pan what I think would make the dish taste good.

It is like, a pinch of this, a pinch of that, a handful of these and a spoonful of that. Oh wait, probably one more spoon of that. You see, sometimes I crave for something and I make up a recipe in my mind and just dance my way into the kitchen and start experimenting.

Well, the dish turned out good, which RARELY happens. But I didn’t want to post a recipe made of approximations because I am trying to be a responsible food blogger. My recipes need to be accurate and reliable because I am assuming and hoping that there are people who read my blog and try my recipes. So next time, I will make sure to list what I put so I can test the recipe again. Lesson learned.

On the other hand, I remember the old school cooking in the Philippines where people in our province actually cook by approximation. You know, cooking by taste. I grew up seeing my auntys and uncles cooking out of huge pots over smoking charcoal without any piece of paper or  memorized recipes at hand. They know the basic ingredients and method of doing a dish and  the amount were just  approximations as they go along. And the food turns out great, everytime. They were not even cooking for a small household like mine. They feed a party of 50 , 60 or even 100. Ha! Such a  pure talent!

As for me, I go online, print recipes, cook and serve.

or

I crave, I imagine , I experiment , (I fail and I dump food in the garbage) and serve.
I wish I will reach a point in my life when I can cook like my auntys and uncles did. But thinking of it, I really did not want to be like a master chef in cooking. I just want to better at it because I still have LOTS to learn.

So those are a glimpse of my life in photos ( and a little words). I kinda had fun narrating short stories to you because it made me reminisce my past life as well.
I hope you all have a food weekend. Happy Labor day to my US readers, if there is any.

And most of all, I hope YOU, all of you have a good day today.

Edit:
PS: I cant believe I wrote “food” instead of “good” in my last paragraph! I did not correct it anymore, just so I have something to smile about whenever I read this 🙂

  1. oh sanna, splurge on yourself from time to time. you deserve a reward 🙂 is the ube ice cream from the philippines? i guess, cooking in approximations will be more achievable when we age. try to put some butter on the noodles next time before you mix the pasta sauce; the taste will be more flavorful 🙂

  2. I love how your pasta looks! I’m sure it tastes better than it looks. That’s right; Filipinos talaga cook without measure. My mom and my Kapampangan aunts do that. I just hope I can cook, too!

  3. Your husband has a lot of sense in him. Hehe. Worth it ang splurge. As long as paminsan-minsan lang, it won’t hurt naman diba? 🙂 It’s also a wonder how the world is brighter and more beautiful when we have kids in our life no? I’m not a mother but I feel the same way when seeing things for the first time with my nephews/nieces.

  4. Hello,
I know it’s been a while since I blogged and I have missed everyone.. Your photos are beautiful, but what caught my eye was that blue Ube ice cream. WoW! I’ve never had blue ice cream and wish I could find it in the US. That pasta dish looks divine too. Thanks for sharing these. 😉
